Earth Matter NY Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing the art, science, and application of composting in and around New York City. Earth Matter NY accepts and processes food waste generated by NYC residents. Through a partnership with The Trust for Governors Island, we process all of the landscape waste and food waste generated by Island partners and visitors.

Objective

On this farm tour, participants will learn about all kinds of composting, from small rotational barrels, to industrial composting facilities, and gain insights about food waste systems in and around New York City. We will have a chance to explore Earth Matter’s educational gardens, lavender fields, and get to hangout with the chickens, understanding how they all tie into one ecosystem. After the tour, participants will be able to ask our hosts questions in the Soil Start Lab, and learn more about the other projects on beautiful Governors Island.
