About the Facilitator
Sarah (Sol) Bacio is originally from Los Angeles and moved to NY in 2017 to pursue a bachelors in Public Health and Sociology from New York University. Sol’s introduction to food justice was in 2020 when they co-founded the Los Angeles-based mutual aid collective, Farm2Power, which continues to distribute free CSA produce boxes to Angelinos in need of food support. After realizing their passion for food justice and community organizing, Sol began exploring the urban agriculture field and is a graduate of the New Roots Horticulture Urban Farm and Garden Training fellowship. At East New York Farms!, Sol oversees all community engagement and outreach efforts including their paid youth internship program, farmers markets, and community gardens assistance program.
Objective
On this farm tour, participants will learn about the history of community gardens in East New York, explore systemic issues faced by the community, and gain insight from the response of local residents to build a healthier and greener neighborhood. Through touring the East New York Youth Farm, participants will see community-led urban agriculture in action and discover how East New York Farms! engages youth and adults in food justice, urban agriculture, and sustainable economic development through their 25 years of programming. After the tour, participants will have the opportunity to support in cleaning and preparing the farm for growing.
